Alcohol Abuse Counseling

In Athens, GA

Kind Recovery specializes in alcohol abuse counseling. Our goal is to help individuals suffering from alcohol abuse or alcoholism in a safe, shame-free environment. We understand that alcohol use is common and about 10% of the time it becomes alcohol dependence. We know that people who struggle are not weak willed, but have a pre-existing vulnerability to addiction based on unique biological, psychological, and social factors. Did you know that 60% of a person’s risk of developing an alcohol use disorder is genetic? We offer group and individual counseling to help reduce the shame and stigma around alcohol use and install effective coping strategies so that you can meet your recovery goals. Our interventions are based in science and kindness, and we can help you build a life that you don’t have to use alcohol to escape from.

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)?

At Kind Recovery, we fully support participation in AA, while acknowledging it is not the right fit for all. We honor AA and the 12-steps as they have helped millions recover from alcoholism. However, we do not mandate that clients participate in AA. Choice is an important aspect of empowering individuals and force is a tradition in the recovery industry we do not support. If you feel AA will be helpful to you, great! We can tailor our approach to fit your needs for AA counseling. If AA does not feel like an option for you, we will assist you in developing other strategies like alternative peer-support groups. Learn about all the meeting options available in Athens here.

Kind Recovery’s treatment is not based on AA. The evidence simply does not support using AA-based traditions to heal from alcohol use disorder. Treatment and AA are not the same, but they are good compliments. Treatment means empirically proven interventions provided by specially trained professionals. We use approaches like Motivational Interviewing, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and EMDR. AA is a non-professional, peer-based support group designed to foster connection and accountability. These approaches combined, often create lasting results. That being said, those who do not wish to engage in AA should not feel they can not recover. We will meet you where you are and design a recovery program that works for you.

Learn More About AA

People are often very intimidated to attend AA, or have preconceived notions about what to expect. These experiences range from social anxiety about strangers to fears that AA is a cult. We created this video with Charlie Shockley, LCSW interviewing a local AA member to help people understand what to expect from AA.
